Items for newsletter #9:

  • Pediculus genome browser [EBI]
  • Call for data to link to our genes (Xref)
  • List of the tools available at VB + those on tutorials + ask for feedback re: tools from users (remove/add some?) - cf e-mail Scott 09 Oct. 09. AND : do a tutorial listing all the tools available! [1]
  • Feedback on VB - survey participation [EBI] - if green light from NIH
 • VectorBase survey
VectorBase has been existing for several years now and we would like to know how we are performing.
We have prepared an on-line survey [link] - it takes only 10 minutes to fill in and will help us to improve
our services for the community. We would be very grateful if you could spare a few minutes to answer our questions.
  • VB Top Tip:
    • Switching on the DAS sources in the GeneView pages.
This was initially done for #8 - check the early version of this Newsletter (ask KM) to find a draft/screen shots for this section.
    • Tutorials
Did you know that about 20 tutorials are available to help you getting started
with VectorBase? They cover a wide range of topics, from browsing the data
(genes, expression and comparison data), to searching ontology, control
vocabulary and population genetics, to parsing data (BioMart), displaying them
(DAS, GDAV) or mining them (Blast).
A full list of tutorial is available on our Help Wiki4..

At some point in the future:

  • M & S Anopheles genome browser (not necessarily with gene sets)

Newsletter Editors - instruction manual

  • Decide on some topics + on the 'VectorBase tip top' and e-mail the VB group to get their opinion/more ideas,
  • Decide who'll be writting what - usually the group producing the data/tool writes about it,
  • E-mail the people who will be writting, giving them a deadline - usually people stick to it.
  • Create the Newsletter, using the .doc version of the previous one (December one available here ),
    • So far we've always used Word but you are welcome to try anything else (Open Office...),
    • Update the Header (just change the month/year),
    • Make sure the font (type+size+bold/italic) are consistent with the previous Newsletters,
    • Newsletter in 1 or 2 pages depending on the number of items,
    • Create a note at the bottom, for the links,
    • It can be a pain to have everything sticking to 2 columns.... swearing, in any language, is allowed.
    • The .doc version is only for editing purpose, don't send it to anyone !
  • Transform in pdf [you should be able to do it from Word],
  • Send it to the VB mailing list for approval (with deadline!), when OK,
  • Send the final pdf version to Greg Madey who will add the link (unless you can do it yourself - the EBI version of Acrobat Reader doesn't allow it) - he usually does it quickly.
  • Update the Wiki and create an HTML version of the Newsletter,
    • ...again, use the previous Newsletter as a template on how to do it. Should mainly be copy/paste. The most annoying is creating a header of the correct size. I copy/paste the Header of the word document in Photoshop and reduce the image by half or a quater (you have to try!). Ask Dan if you can't do it.
  • Send to the VB newsletter mailing list,
    • Use the previous Newsletter announcement as a support for the new e-mail (or write a new one if you feel like it),
    • You might not be allowed to e-mail the Newsletter list, ask Dan to do it or to allow you.
  • E-mail NotreDame so they update the main page of the website (update the 'VB Newsletter' section on the right hand side),
  • Add a News item,
  • Add a Forum item, attach PDF to post
  • Tweet it (two short links to forum item and PDF)
  • You're done!
